Different Sleepers = Different Choices

Mattresses

We all sleep differently and have different body types so a one-size-fits-all mattress doesn’t exist. Here’s some information to assist you in your decision making. The right support = best restorative sleep.

Quick Buying Guide

• Side sleeper: Medium or medium-soft with strong pressure relief. Side sleepers need pressure relief for the shoulders and hips while maintaining spinal alignment.

• Back sleeper: Medium-firm with good lumbar support.

Back sleepers need support that maintains the natural curve of the spine - providing proper spinal alignment and airway support. This position evenly distributes body weight, relieving pressure on shoulders and hips; but it can cause the lower back to sink and may exacerbate snoring or sleep apnea.

• Stomach sleeper: Firm mattress that prevents hip sinkage. Stomach sleeping is the least recommended position due to the amount of strain that it exerts on the spine.

• Combination sleeper: Medium-firm hybrid that responds quickly to movement. A responsive hybrid with pocketed coils and transition foam layers allows you to move freely without fighting your bed. No more wrestling with your bed instead of resting. 74% of adults are combination sleepers according to Sleep Foundation research.

• Hot sleeper: Look for hybrids, latex, or cooling technologies. People sleep hot for four main reasons: 1. biological factors like a fast metabolism. 2- hormone fluctuations (such as menopause). 3- an overly warm sleep environment- thermostat should be about 680. 4- heat-trapping bedding or mattresses. Choosing the right mattress helps no matter the cause.

• Couples: Prioritize motion isolation and edge support. Edge support makes it easier to sit on the side of the bed and get out of bed without disturbing your partner. Mattress materials and edge support provide motion isolated allowing partner better sleep. Materials that adapt to your changing positions, such as memory foam or individually wrapped coils, can provide motion isolation.

• Body Type: Weight makes a difference. People who weigh less than 130 pounds may find a softer mattress more comfortable. Heavier sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds often prefer a firmer mattress to prevent sinkage. Mattresses offer firmness variances within these types.

Pillows

There are 43 different types of pillows. Confusing? Don’t worry – We have your back...or head that is. The best pillow keeps your neck and spine in a neutral, relaxed position all night.

Whether you’re a side sleeper with broad shoulders, a stomach sleeper who needs something flatter, or someone who just wants a cooler, more breathable option, there’s a pillow designed for you. Follow Restore Fusion’s guide and you will find a great pillow for a more restorative sleep that will restore and renew you.

Types of Pillows - Based on Material & Fill

This table will give you a good idea of which material is best for whom and what:

Pillow Type Material / Fill
Latex Pillow Made from natural or synthetic latex (rubber)
Shredded Latex Pillow Filled with small, shredded bits of latex (rubber)
Memory Foam Pillow Made from viscoelastic polyurethane foam that softens with heat
Shredded Memory Foam Pillow Chopped-up memory foam pieces
Cotton Pillow Stuffed with soft, natural cotton fibers
Feather Pillow Filled with the outer feathers of ducks or geese
Down Pillow Stuffed with the fluffy under-feathers (down clusters) of birds
Down Alternative Pillow Filled with synthetic fibers like polyester
Wool Pillow Packed with natural sheep's wool
Buckwheat Pillow Filled with the outer shells of buckwheat seeds
Gel Pillow Contains cooling gel-infused foam
Fiberfill Pillow Stuffed with polyester fibers
Microbead Pillow Filled with tiny polystyrene beads
Bamboo Pillow Bamboo-derived rayon cover and shredded memory foam fill
Kapok Pillow Filled with silky fibers from the kapok tree pod

Firmness

1. Extra Soft: Squishy and highly compressible. Your head will sink deep into the surface with very little resistance. However, extra soft pillows often lack the structure needed for proper support and can flatten too easily, especially for people with broader shoulders or heavier heads.

2. Soft: Plush, cushiony feel but with a bit more shape than extra soft. They may still compress more than necessary, which can lead to poor alignment over time if your neck or head needs more support.

3. Medium-soft: Subtle balance between cushioning and light support. They gently cradle the head and neck.

4. Medium: Strike the most balanced feel. They’re often considered the most versatile option. If you prefer a pillow that molds closely to your head, a medium pillow might feel too structured.

5. Firm: Hold their shape and provide consistent elevation throughout the night.

6. Extra Firm: Dense, solid, and resist compression almost entirely.

Pillow Guide

Sleeping Position

Position Loft Firmness Recommended Materials/Designs
Side Sleepers High (4-6 inches) Medium to firm • Buckwheat hulls (adjustable, breathable)• Solid or shredded latex (bouncy, supportive)• Contour/side-sleeper pillows (ergonomic shape)
Back Sleepers Medium (3-5 inches) Medium • Solid latex or memory foam (contours to neck curve)• Hybrid (foam + fiber) for balance• Wedge (for occasional reflux/snoring relief)

Weight Range Best Pillow Type
Under 130 lbs Softer foam/fill and lower loft often feel most comfortable
130–230 lbs A balanced medium-firm pillow with medium loft tends to work best
Over 230 lbs You’ll need firmer, high-loft pillows (latex, buckwheat) to avoid bottoming out

Head and Neck Shape

Body Type Recommendation
Narrow Shoulders / Petite Frame Lower to medium loft, so the neck isn’t overextended
Broad Shoulders / Larger Frame Higher loft and firmer pillows to maintain neck alignment
